"Behind the Fun"

Today we had an "on the boat" type of excursion.  The only one there is, I think.  My mom signed us all up for a tour of the boat!

It was super cool!  We weren't allowed to take pictures but they provided us with a few.  We started with the backstage of the theater and learned about the dancers and singers.  They're hired for 8 month intervals and perform the same things every week!  I don't know how they don't puke all the time - we were being thrown around standing in their dressing room at the bottom of the ship.  You could even hear the water splashing up against the boat!

We then went to the kitchen where it was super humid.  All kitchens have that school cafeteria smell, even when they produce tasty dining room food.  It was amazing, though, to see the cake decorators and the guy who carves watermelon.

We went to the lower decks of the ship and saw the engine room, the storage of all the food and soda, the staff cafeteria/buffet, and the laundry room (we got to try their towel folder!)  I enjoyed our time with the HR lady who answered all of our questions about the cruise ship life.  I had been quite curious about life on a boat.  It seems like such an interesting career choice, but it would be cool to have the opportunity to stop in all the different ports (that is, if your day off aligns with a port day).  I think I would go insane being stuck on a boat all day.  Because even on your days off... you would be on the boat.  And what would you even do?  But, if Bailey and I ever decide to try out the cruise staff life, they do accommodate married couples.  We would have a bunk bed all to ourselves!

The coolest part of the tour would probably be the "bridge", where we could see right out the front of the boat and the tiny wheel that steers the whole thing.  It was a grand area, and the view was just amazing.  It also helped with seasickness, to see the waves that were causing the bumps and sways (it's been a bit of a bumpy trip, poor Kylie gets the most sick but thankfully my mom brought patches.  I just get a little nauseous here and there).  Oh, and Bailey's favorite part - we got to meet the Captain!  The captain works for three months then switches off with another captain while he gets three months off.  His family can join him at any time, too.  Bailey and I decided that would be a pretty cool gig to pursue.

If you ever find yourself on a Carnival ship, I do recommend you check out the behind the scenes tour.  It was so interesting to learn about how the ship works and about how many people it takes to have a good crew.  In the end we got some swan carved soap, drawstring bags, baseball caps, lanyards, and other various Carnival merch, haha.  Best of all, we had some unexpected chocolate covered strawberries delivered to our door shortly after the tour!
