New Year's in Naples

Happy New year! Today's plans totally fell through so we were forced to relax and take it easy. Oh the horror!

We wanted to take a train and bus down to Sorrento and the Amalfi coast, which we could of, but upon further inquiry at the train station we found out that all the trains stop around noon, so we wouldn't be able to get back to Naples from there. We then thought about renting a car but the rental places were closed. Then a taxi driver wanted to take us on a day tour to the coast but we didn't really want to be on his time. So he proposed we go to Pompeii instead, to which I replied that they are closed today!! He assured me that they were not closed, and that if so we don't have to pay him. It would only be a 15 minute drive anyway. So he took my friends and my skeptical self all the way there and back. Because they were closed haha. He ended up being really nice and some of my friends tried to pay him anyway and he didn't accept, so even though he was misinformed and should have known that Pompeii was closed, Alfonso wasn't too bad of a guy at all.

We pretty much saw all that Naples has to offer yesterday, so we were kind of at a loss as to what to do. We grabbed some lunch at McDonald's (everywhere else is closed okay??) and some gelato then went back to the Airbnb for a nap. Traveling is not always glamorous my friends!

On our way back to our Airbnb we stopped by the Toledo station downtown, because we read that it was a Naples must-see. Not sure if I'd exactly agree with that, but it was cool!

Just before sunset (which is pretty early here) we went on a little walk up a large hill. It included many steps but the view at the top was worth it! Such a pretty city! The evening ended with some caprese salad and shrimp pasta next to this sculpture. Oh, and more gelato.

What a weird day it was! We tried not to be disappointed but it's hard not to feel like we were wasting time. Had we planned a little bit better we could have figured out a car or driver situation, but it still would have been expensive. Really there was just no way around the fact that the country was recovering from a major night of partying! And we were recovering from jetlag anyway, so honestly the extra sleep was quite welcome.
